Apple Crumble
The cosiest winter dessert…
Ingredients:
Filling:
10 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
1/2 cup sugar (caster, coconut etc.). If you choose to use honey, I would use less as it is typically sweeter
1 tbsp plain flour
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp lemon juice, fresh
1 tsp cinnamon, ground
Crumble:
1 cup oats
1 cup flour
1 cup brown sugar
125g butter, unsalted
2 tsp cinnamon, ground
Method:
Wash and peel apples. Dice into bite size chunks.
Over medium heat, add apples into a saucepan with water, lemon juice, sugar and cinnamon. Cook apples down until they are tender. You don’t want your apples to become pureed— the smaller the apple chunks, the less time to cook. Once apples are almost finished, add in flour and stir to combine. Take off heat and set aside.
Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius.
In a seperate bowl, add filling ingredients. Squeeze the butter between your fingers to combine with dry ingredients. You mixture should almost resemble cookie dough.
Once apple mixture has cooled, transfer to a baking dish. Pour over crumble mixture and distribute evenly.
Place apple crumble in oven for about 20-30 minutes, or until fragrant and golden on top.
Serve hot on a frosty day with ice cream, vanilla custard, cream or all of the above!
Serves: 6-8
*This recipe includes a high amount of refined sugar. I truly believe everything in moderation, however, if you do wish to consume less sugar when you make this, you could easily halve the amount of sugar in the apple filling and it would still be absolutely divine. The cinnamon adds a natural sweetness already.
**You may also like to use red apples as a substitute for using less refined sugar, for a naturally sweeter apple filling.
